Filial piety was a set of duties and rules that helped moralists portray the Chinese people as one large family. Some of these rules and duties were that the father was the head of the household and that he passed his leadership to his eldest son. Children had the duty to fulfill their parent's desires. Filial piety was the foundation of family values.
