1 janv. 1981 - Firing of Air Traffic Controllers

Description:

The rise of conservatism in the late 1970s led to the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 and Reaganomics which was President Reagan's economic policy based on supply side economics and industry deregulation. Industry regulations ultimately led to less federal government support of organized labor and unions. In 1981, a strike by air traffic controllers for better working conditions and pay ended with the strikers who did not return to work within 48 hours being fired by Reagan. The significance of this event is that Reagan's anti union policies led to a dramatic decline in union membership throughout the 1980s. Union membership fell to 16 percent. Unions have never regained the strength they had prior to the 1980s and without union protections wages dropped and the gap between rich and poor increased.
