1 janv. 1894 - Pullman Strike

Description:

In 1893 a severe economic depression motivated George Pullman, the owner of a luxury sleeping railcar factory outside Chicago, to cu wages without also reducing rents his workers paid for living in company houses. This led to a strike in 1894 which disrupted rail service nationwide and threatened mail deliver. As a result, President Grover Cleveland ordered federal troops to get the railroads moving again. The significance is that this reinforced the idea of the federal government using legal and military authority to side with employers and suppress militant workers.
