Composer: Josepha Barbara Auernhammer
Genre: Theme and variation
Translation: 6 variations on a Hungarian theme
Theme
The ternary form theme featuring contrasting slurred and staccato articulation well demonstrates the lightness and wit characteristic of classical melodies.
Variation 1
The right hand is up an octave, and arpeggios,
quick passagework runs, and small ornaments are added to the melody line. Despite this melodic decoration, the form and harmony remain the same.
Variation 2
The hands switch parts with no other changes to the original theme.
Variation 3
Has a flowing accompaniment, adding stronger cadences and chromaticism for more harmonic expression. Employs Strum and Drag style for the B section of the theme with upward scales at a loud dynamic and fast tempo.
Variation 4
This nearly monophonic variation has basic chords over the top with further elaborated and developed chromaticism. Ascending scales carry the melody and are in the left hand in the B section.
Variation 5
Quite subdued, features a soft and gentle octave ostinato on the V of F in the right hand.
Variation 6
Longer than the previous movements, this final variation acts like a coda of sorts, a very common feature of the Classical and early Romantic eras. It has a distinct codetta marked with fast ascending flourishes in the right hand, and it features extra cadences. The harmony is a horn call, or a hunting motif, full of ostinatos and scale passagework. In the final return to the original theme, this variation returns to the basic setting of the theme.
