Description:

In England, the English king, Edward the Confessor died without an heir to the throne. Many men believed it was their right to rule. Contenders include Harold Godwinson (powerful Earl of Wessex) who had himself crowned almost immediately and was part of the Saxon army and Edward's cousin William (Duke of Normandy - an area settled by Vikings in France) from the Viking/Norman army. Armies battled near the town of Hastings. William won and was crowned king of England. He became known as William the Conqueror. He also Introduced Norman beliefs and traditions to England including feudalism. He changed the way society and laws in England and other societies across Europe were organised.
