Operation Barbarossa was the plan set by Hitler to defeat Russia swiftly to take care of another enemy and to lower the hopes of other countries fighting back against Germany. This plan did end up taking Russia by surprise, as there had been limited preparations on potential battle fronts and on defense. Within two days, Germany destroyed 2,000 Russian planes. The siege of Leningrad and Moscow brought down Russian moral and showed flaws in their own systems. The planned attacks on Stalingrad got Stalin ready to form a full counter attack on the Germans. As Germany was about to try and go on the offense in Moscow, winter hit greatly decreasing the effectiveness of the German military and giving them a major disadvantage. This eventually led to Germany pulling out of Russia and ending the battles with their own surrender.
