1 févr. 1957 - Alexandra Bus Boycott
Description:
Explanation
The leaders were Dan Mokonyane and the Alexandra People’s Transport Action Committee (APTAC) and gained support from Mandela, Tambo, and the ANC.
The goal was to walk 22 miles to work in Johannesburg every day until the bus fare was reverted.
Causes
Bus fare increased from 2 to 3 pence by the Putco bus service.
Rising dissatisfaction in Alexandra with petty apartheid especially.
Consequences
The boycott spread to other townships which had not necessarily received increased bus fares but walked in solidarity with the Alexandra people.
Bus fare reduced back to 2 pence as the Johannesburg City Council subsidized the bus company.
A Bill was passed in Parliament supporting the reduced bus fares
