10 mai 1938 - Neville Chamberlain resigns,
Edward Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax becomes the 86th British Prime Minister
Description:
It was embarrassing for British politics when Chamberlain arrived back in the United Kingdom and proclaimed a victory with "Peace in our time"... only to be revealed to have accidentally opened another major war in Europe and yet another major conquest by an appearing power on the world stage and didn't stop them when given the opportunity.
With the tactic of appeasement showing its true colours and how it has failed Europe, King Edward VIII had to make the choice to see who would be the best to succeed Chamberlain, Edward called upon Edward Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax to become the new prime minister.
Halifax, a fierce opponent towards the German government and the King may have not seen eye to eye, but with the King's influence decreasing in light of poorly placed statements about the British position of Germany's aggression the King was faced with no choice. Halifax went on to form a conservative government and prepared to fight Germany.
Halifax's choice for his War Minister would be proven only controversial. Winston Churchill's record of failures in military strategies in the Great War (WW1) still haunts him to this day, it was only his correct assumption of Hitler's aims that earned his place back in Parliament.
Nonetheless, Churchill moved swiftly to prepare his country for the fight against Germany.
