Benelux, Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg, was the first true EU-esque economic cooperative that inspired many of the following organizations. The three nations, which had long been allies because of their small size and close proximity, allowed for free circulation of goods, as well as common economic policies and open borders. Many of these policies as well as others would become the basis for the UN, and are now some of the UN's most famous (and important) aspects. This small union would become the ECSC for a short time then evolve into the EEC and EU. Though the organization itself was realtively small and not very impactful, it was very important conceptually as it revived ideas and gave structure for a new international unity among Europeans.
