Description:

Brinkmanship was a foreign relations policy endorsed by Secretary of State John Dulles because he thought that the Truman Doctrine was not bold enough. In essence, he wanted to push the Soviets to the brink of war (hence the name) and force them to surrender by trying to give independence to satellite states and persuade neighboring countries to take a public stand against the Soviets and China. This policy arose from the fact that Dulles wanted the U.S. to be more upfront in their opposition to Communism. Though it was supported by the Republican Party, it was not very popular country-wide and did not come to fruition.
