Male Status Indians and Métis 21 years and over were expected to choose a last name that the government approved, and to learn how to read, write and speak either English or French. . The Act gives land to males only in the amount of 50 acres. The men had to be “sufficiently advanced” and give up their treaty rights and tribal connections.
