- according to trujillo: was kind of about criollos getting mad that peninsulares were gainin a monopoly of land in the interior/ moving into coffee, and then spains in the 1860's cut down on ability to organize; says that as a result spain liberalizes policies and lets them roganize, which is what leads to political parties
- according to RS (2012), same thing, but more specifically small coffee owners against financial structures that make culnerable tos spanish merchants, as well as free labor trying to resist proletarianization and land dispossession; she says it was unsuccesful and the reason they got stuff after was spain having a liberal revolution
