14 avr. 1828 - Webster's Dictionary

Description:

Noah Webster is the author of the American Dictionary of the English Language. He was an education reformer, political activist, author of textbooks, pioneer in epidemiology, newspaper editor, and an early antislavery advocate.

American Dictionary of the English Language
Noah Webster’s influence on American life and language is larger than many of us know. He believed having an Americanized version of English was the first step to truly asserting independence as a nation. He regarded its contributions to standardized language usage and spelling as integral to building a new nation. In this dictionary, Webster deleted many silent letters, simplified spelling, rearranged some letters (centre => center), added 'j' and 'v', etc.

The fact that millions of people and children were using Webster's dictionary (and also his textbooks) greatly contributed to creating a national identity of Americans by having their own 'American' English. This national re-education meant that the colonies had developed their own identity, separate from the United Kingdom and therefore they were no longer considered just a British colony, but an American nation.
