Description:

Robert Fulton invented the Steamboat, and this invention was important because it revolutionized travel on water. They were many times more efficient than wind-powered boats.

Another invention that innovated travel was steam locomotives. They made it extremely easy to travel on land and were much faster than traveling on a horse.

Roads/Canals/Railroads:

1. A canal is defined as "an artificial waterway constructed to allow the passage of boats or ships inland or to convey water for irrigation." One very famous canal is the Panama canal.
2. The national Road is quote: "The first major improved highway in the United States built by the federal government. Built between 1811 and 1837, the 620-mile road connected the Potomac and Ohio Rivers and was a main transport path to the West for thousands of settlers."
3. In the U.S in 1830, the total number of Railroad Mileage was 9.23 Miles. In the U.S in 1860, the total number of railroad mileage was 1822 Miles.
4. Railroad expansion was important because it innovated transportation of goods and people all across the U.S. Using Railroads, you could transport larger quantities of materials and people at a faster rate, and with way more efficiency. The expansion of Railroads helped this method of fast travel get better and better, as it was reaching new locations.
