The Crédit Mobilier scandal of 1872 happened when large stockholders in the Union Pacific railroad line formed a company (Crédit Mobilier of America) and granted it the contracts to build the railroad. It benefited everyone involved, because the Congressmen involved in the company approved federal subsidies, letting the Crédit Mobilier of America company make large profits.
