21 mars 1680 - Whigs and Tories (1680s)
Description:
These two political parties of the English Parliament were born in the struggle against Charles II. The Whigs began as a party in favor of the merchants and middle classes of England, who supported the nobleman that wanted greater control over England from the King, whereas the Tories were of the lesser aristocracy and gentry and felt a strong loyalty to the king and the church. These parties would exist in England’s political system for centuries to come. (Palmer 165)
