Following the rescue of Guilidus and the defeat of the Stormfist usurpers, Gondul eventually returned to the Harborage to convene with Varen and the other Companions about their search for Sai Sahan.

Upon his arrival, Lyris and Abnur were bickering. Varen addressed all three of them, explaining that he had, along with Abnur, identified the location of the Halls of Torment from Mannimarco's notes, and that the time had come to mount a rescue of Sai.

Ultimately, he advised Gondul to choose between Abnur and Lyris to accompany him into Oblivion. Lyris tried to convince him to choose her, but Gondul — reminiscing on his recent mistakes with Gudrune, Vignar and the death of Occidere — decided not to follow his emotions. He instead chose Abnur, who had a far broader understanding of Daedric magic.

The two teleported to the Halls of Torment through a portal opened by Varen. Soon, they could hear the echoing voice of Mannimarco demanding the location of the Amulet of Kings.

The voice continued, mocking Sai Sahan in his failure to protect his Emperor. Sai's voice responded in utter defiance. Gondul and Abnur watched as an apparition of Abnur appeared before Sai, demanding the location of the Amulet once again.

Not willing to sit idly by as Sai was being tormented, Gondul charged the apparition, which summoned several Daedra in defense. Combat ensued, and the Daedra and doppelganger soon lied dead before them. The apparition of Sai then vanished, a female voice taunting proceeding to taunt him over Gondul and Abnur's attempts to save him.

As the men pressed onward, the voice continued to taunt them. Soon, it conjured a small army of doppelgangers, all of whom were the members of the Brotherband — including Rowena. In a moment of emotional turmoil, Gondul removed his helm and dropped his axe in heartbreak. Abnur tried to calm him, but it was only the voice of Rowena within him that managed to soothe him back into his senses.

Abnur and Gondul fought the doppelgangers, killing them all after a difficult battle. As they continued forward, they were soon intercepted by a Doppelganger of Lyris. As they fought it, it devolved into its true form; that of a powerful Dremora. Gondul killed it, making his way over to Sai, who was chained to the wall.

He released him from his cuffs, helping him down. Sai was confused, asking Gondul who he was and why he had come to rescue him. Gondul explained that the Emperor had sent him. He was surprised to hear that Varen had survived the Soulburst. He explained that he never revealed the location of the Amulet of Kings despite his torture.

Gondul could hardly stress how much he honored him, and soon the three men returned to Varen's portal and back to the Harborage. Sai professed his newfound friendship in Gondul, and that he would serve him without hesitation.

Gondul returned the courtesy, explaining that he needed leaders like him. Sai accepted the offer to help lead the Separatists to victory. He then explained that he hid the Amulet of Kings in a sacred catacomb, protected by magical wards. The means of lifting the wards were in the keeping of his old mentor, a woman named Kasura, and that he would meet with her as soon as he was able.

However, he continued to claim that he was unsure if her key would remove the wards completely, and that they would need a powerful ally who was capable of powerful magic to be certain.

Gondul proposed he would hold a council with the Ruby Brotherband to discuss the matter. A carrier pigeon had then entered the Harborage through a small crevice in the cave walls, landing on the table with a small letter attached to it. It was from Dainsleif, requesting to speak to him about a potential recruit. With this, Gondul set off to meet him.
