Some time after attending the Pact war council, Gondul resigned to the Flaming Nix inn in Mournhold. While ordering a drink, a Nord man addressed him in a friendly manner, partially drunk.

Gondul acknowledged the man, passing himself off as a humble wandering merchant. The man was happy to be in the company of who he thought was a fellow Nord so far south, offering to buy Gondul a drink.

Gondul politely declined, concerned over potentially being poisoned by the stranger. The man asked Gondul what brought him to Mournhold, to which Gondul lied, claiming that he was simply delivering goods to Pact troops.

The man was glad to hear it, claiming that he was once a soldier and had fought beside High King Jorunn previously. Gondul was impressed, mentioning the rumors of the King's recent poisoning. The man acknowledged the rumors, decrying them, but ultimately proclaiming the King was strong and would be just fine.

Gondul agreed, affirming that the King was back on his feet and was returning to his duties. As the men continued to converse, Gondul learned that he was a veteran who was wounded in combat, the army refusing to take him after his injuries. He took up farming, raising his bastard son to make an honest living — but that he wished to find men who would take him, hopefully to one day achieve a death worthy enough to grant him entry into Sovngarde. His name was Dainsleif Kvaeld-Ulf, he proclaimed.

Dainsleif was honored upon discovering that Gondul was from Atmora, praising the man before him. After sharing news of his final departure from Atmora and the horrific blizzard that nearly killed him in the process, Gondul asked Dainsleif what his thoughts of the current Empire were.

The man seemed disgusted, saying that it was ruled by the wrong people — weak men who had never seen battle. Gondul inquired about if he would like to see a new Empire arise one day. Dainsleif admitted he cared little for the prospect, only that he sought honor, and that any man who could offer him that was as good as any other.

Admiring the man before him, Gondul expressed that a new Empire would be important at the very least for the future of Dainsleif's son, to which the man agreed, but asking what he could possibly do for such a cause.

Gondul then whispered to him the truth; that he was the Headmaster of the Ruby Brotherband, a special forces unit for the Imperial Separatists. The man grinned, asking if this was an offer to join.

Gondul proceeded to offer the man a place in the Brotherband — which Dainsleif humbly accepted, kneeling before Gondul as the Headmaster tapped his shoulders with his axe.
