Riots about race spread throughout Manhattan neighborhoods of Harlem and Bed-Stuy after Irish American NYPD lieutenant, Thomas Gilligan, shot and killed the African American teenager, James Powell (age 15). At Bed-Stuy, these riots often resulted in destruction and looting of money in the neighborhood businesses, many of which were Jewish-owned. Fires spread to Bed-Stuy two days after Powell's death, where about 4,000 rioters ransacked multiple of the stores local to that area and pelted the police and firefighters with bottles and bricks.Ajouté au bande de temps:
