Marking the turning point in the Civil War, the Gettysburg campaign began in June 1863. It consisted of a major series of engagements in Pennsylvania between the army of north Virginia (Confederate) and the army of the Potomac (Union), after Robert E LEE, the Southern commander, decided to take the war into the North. The Battle of Gettysburg ended with a Union victory, but with heavy losses on both sides (Union 23,000; Confederate 25,000).
