In May 1966, the cultural revolution, led by chairman Mao began to promote communism and destroy capitalist or bourgeoise ideas and traditions. During the revolution, the red guard consisting of China's youth were taught to destroy the four olds: old ideas, culture, habits, and customs. With Mao’s death in 1976, the revolution, responsible for an estimated 20 million deaths, ends.
