Greenberg said that 'orthodox surrealists' (member of the Paris surrealist group) had 'reacted against abstract purity and turned back to a confusion of literature with painting as extreme as any of the past' - Greenberg thought surrealist was confusing, merely an absurd reaction to abstract purity, its painting was extreme.
