While Gondul was doing work in Northern Cyrodiil, a courier confronted him, handing him a sealed letter. On the navy-blue wax seal was the Crest for the Mages Guild.

It was in a circular scroll-like fold with a hard center. Gondul plucked off the blue seal and unraveled it, a peculiar-looking Soul Gem falling out. He quickly caught the gem — the moment his flesh met it, however, he received dashing and terrifying visions of an all-too familiar face.

"Concerning Lady Rowena." it was titled.

"If this letter falls into the wrong hands, it is likely I will be killed, but you must know the truth — as Rowena spoke much about you. One of the Mages within our Guild has betrayed us, and has conspired with the Wormcultists. Your Lady Rowena was targeted, and her Soul has been trapped in the black soul gem provided with this letter. Thankfully, the Necromancer responsible was confronted shortly after, and we managed to retrieve the black soul gem he used to trap Rowena's soul. However, we cannot find Rowena's body. Perhaps you know where she remains. For now, her Soul is safe inside of the gem, away from the grasps of Mannimarco and Molag Bal. Find Rowena's body — before it is too late. Seek out someone who can release her Soul from the gem and merge it with her body. It is her only hope. You cannot allow her Soul to enter the Soulcairn, nor can you allow it to fall into the hands of Mannimarco, where it would surely be cast into the cells of Coldharbour. The Mages Guild shall seek the traitor responsible in the meantime. Good luck, friend. I wish you the best."

Below the letter, it was signed '-Anonymous'. Gondul folded the letter and stared at the Gem once more, several heartbeat-like pulses vibrating from it's core.

He was conflicted as to whether or not he could risk weeks trying to save his dearest friend, or if the looming March on Cyrodiil was too important to forego.

Black Soul Gems are a special type of soul gem that, unlike conventional ones, can contain both black and white souls.

Black souls are those of sentient, humanoid beings, such as Men, Mer, Argonians, Khajiit, and Dremora, whereas white souls are those of animals and certain lesser Daedra. All black souls are of the grand level. The main benefit of a black soul gem is that it can capture grand leveled souls from humanoids, whereas those souls cannot normally be captured.

After a black soul gem is used for enchanting, the soul that was inside it goes to the Soul Cairn.

The souls of humanoids trapped in these soul gems remain conscious. They are generally regarded as unethical.

The Soul Cairn is one of the many planes of Oblivion. The realm houses the souls of beings whos souls were trapped and used by Black Soul Gems. Rather than belonging to a Daedric Prince, it is controlled by a group of beings known as the Ideal Masters.

The Ideal Masters are enigmatic entities that lord over the Soul Cairn, little to nothing is actually known about these Ideal Masters; what they are, where they came from, or even what they look like, they control every aspect of the Soul Cairn.

Many Necromancers make deals with the Ideal Masters in hopes of getting immense necromantic power. Unfortunately, these Necromancers are usually tricked by the Ideal Masters and end up trapped in the Soul Cairn forever.
