Description:

He was sentenced to die because he was accused of claiming to rule by divine right and being suborn he refused to answer this or any other charge. He claimed that parliament had no right to bring charges against him at all. He claimed that god had sovereignty and had delegates it to the king: the puritans in parliament claimed that they had sovereignty. He was found guilty and sentenced to die. His death represented the ending of the monarchy and a new form of government arose to take its place. England called its new republic the commonwealth.
