Description:
The Geneva Accords gave Vietnam its independence after they drove the French from their country. Many countries attended the convention. The U.S. attended but only as an observer, so that they would not have to sign the compromise because it would allow communism to spread and the U.S. did not want communism to spread in any way. After the Geneva Accords, Ho Chi Minh ignored the existence of the Viet Minh.
The Geneva Accords are important because they allow Ho Chi Minh to set up a communist dictatorship following them. This dictatorship was what the U.S. fought against for a portion of the war, and is why the U.S. opposed Ho Chi Minh’s Vietnam as much as it did.
