8 juill. 27 av. J.-C. - Octavian takes the name Augustus, and establishes himself as the first of the roman emperors

Description:

The beginning of the Roman Empire traditionally dates to the reign of the first emperor, Octavian. Octavian took the name Augustus, to emphasize his relationship with Caesar. Augustus was the grandnephew and adopted son of Julius Caesar. While Caesar had failed to restore order to Rome and had been assassinated, Augustus succeeded. He surrounded himself with military leaders. With complete control of the army and navy, Augustus had authority over Rome, but he sought to satisfy the Senate and people of Rome by appearing to restore the ways of the republic. He showered honors on the Senate and brought back the old political offices. Thus, Augustus claimed to be the true father of Rome's prosperity after his trial and error.
