The Carlsbad Decrees were the result of the ministerial conferences held in Carlsbad from August 6 to 31, 1819, in which the most influential states in the German Confederation took part. They banned nationalist fraternities ("Burschenschaften"), removed liberal university professors, and expanded the censorship of the press.
