The return of Hong Kong is considered a major event in human history. The return of the treaty port marks the end of the British Empire and thus the rise of a new "Pax Americana". The Treaty Port wasn't the most important piece of the pie on it's lonesome. Sure it was a good trade port, and maybe naval base but compared to the loss of India, Egypt, or any of these other colonies it would seem very insignificant. But the loss of Hong Kong is far more symbolic then either of these. You see after losing the prior the British tried to kick and fight over it but here in Hong Kong you see a peaceful exchange of power as the British except that colonialism and imperialism are things of the past and the British are moving forward into a new age of progressivism and globalism.
