7 juin 1832 - The Great Reform Act is passed

Description:

In 1832 the Great Reform Act was passed by Parliament. The law that was passed changed the British electoral system. For years people criticized the electoral system as unfair and corrupt. For example many MP’s would take advantage of rotten boroughs ( borough was able to elect a representative to Parliament though having very few voters, the choice of representative typically being in the hands of one person or family) they would buy votes. In 1831, the House of Commons passed a Reform Bill, but the House of Lords, dominated by Tories, defeated it. The current king, King William IV lost popularity for standing in the way of reform. Eventually he agreed to create new Whig peers, and when the House of Lords heard this, they agreed to pass the Reform Act. Rotten boroughs were removed and the new towns given the right to elect MPs. The Great Reform act is a tremendous step towards a free and fair elcorate in England. It allowed for members of parliament to be elected fairly and has gotten rid of muh corruption within parliament. This reform is enabling England a step closer to become a more free and fair place. This is also a step towards a more demacatic country due to people being able to be elected into parliament fairly.
