Description:

The Guardian was founded by John Edward Taylor in 1821 and first published on 5 May 1821. The paper was intended to promote the liberal thinking and interest in the aftermath of the Peterloo Massacre. The Peterloo Massacre took place on 16 August 1819, it was a meeting of peaceful campaigners for parliamentary reform was broken up by the Manchester Yeomanry. A local force made up of volunteer soldiers violently broke up the group leaving between 10 and 20 people killed and hundreds more injured. With the new ideas of freedom, liberty and equality the Guardian was the first paper to spread them to the common man.
With the establishment of the Guardian it shows that the liberal ideas that were birthed from the French Revolution were now spreading into England. The ideas of freedom, liberty and equality are now a guiding force. This is a major step for the people of England to try and gain more freedoms. The Guardian was the first published paper that talked about libral idea and thinking, this is one of many causes for social and political reform.
