The Democratic- Republicans were founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, to oppose the programs of Alexander Hamilton. This group favored strong STATE governments, believed that people should have political power, emphasized agriculture and strict interpretation of the Constitution, pro- French (unlike Hamilton), and opposed Hamilton's idea of the National Bank.(Key Concept 3.3: I)
