Relatively early on, Gondul and Rowena grew to enjoy each other's company. Rowena's sweet and subtle charm pulled Gondul away from the evils that plagued Tamriel, and Gondul's endearing and oft grandiose plans of hope and change inspired Rowena to be more confident.

Not long after she was recruited into the Ruby Brotherband, they spent the night together at Gondul's temporary lodging in Morrowind. The following day, Gondul helped her in gathering books for the Mages Guild where she had been studying in her downtime. Both of them had the opportunity to face action against Dwemer machinery as a team, and either person was impressed by the other — doubly so for Rowena, given she was blind.

As they gathered books in the dusty and barren ruins, Rowena revealed a deep secret with the man she had grown to trust — though the specifics of this secret have remained a mystery over time, as Gondul never wrote of its details in his journal — only that it had transpired.
