The Articles of Confederation was the first written constitution of the USA. IT was ratified on March 1st, 1781. The articles allowed the states to stay independent and kept congress as a last resort when it came to disputes. The articles did very little for the US as they didn't give much power to a centralized government. The federal government didn't have the power to tax, regulate, or borrow money. Therefore, the lack of powers given in the articles led up to the need for the Consitutional Convention of 1787.
