With people who either sailed or sponsored voyages, they were able to popularize slavery. The Portuguese traded for West African slaves that they sent to sugar plantations on islands off the coast of Africa The first European colonizers in the New World to participate heavily in the slave trade. An example was Brazil. It was a sugar colony that used slave labor from Africa. Because the Europeans were bring in people along with diseases, the Indian population decimated by disease.(key concept 1.2, I)
