22 juill. 1838 - Indian Removal Act

Description:

The Indian Removal Act, or The Trail of Tears was the forced removal of more than one-hundred-thousand Indians from the southeast to new Indian Territory, where many of the Indians died. /Before the Indian Removal Act happened, Andrew Jackson’s Democrats committed to westward expansion. Before 1820, more than 125,000 Native Americans lived east of the Mississippi river and missionaries opened schools for them. The U.S government funded literacy, agricultural, and vocational instruction. Many of these tribes followed this path and became cotton planters, and at one point, some owned slaves.
