1 janv. 1828 - 7. Andrew Jackson

Description:

*Andrew Jackson ran again, this time beating incumbent John Quincy Adams.* He did so by modeling himself as the "common man". Jackson did quite a bit whilst in office. He reenacted the Tariff of Abominations, which angered the Southern states. When South Carolina passes the Nullification Ordinance, saying states could ignore federal laws they felt were unjust, Jackson passed the Force bill, which allowed the Federal Government to use force to collect taxes. Jackson also saw the Indian Removal act passed, which led to the Indians in the southeast being forced to move west on what would come to be known as the "Trail of Tears". Jackson also vetoed a bill renewing the Second Bank of America's charter. Finally, he passed the Gag rule, which authorized the seizure of anti-slavery mail in the south. Under Jackson, the power the President held was greatly increased, molding it into what it has come to today.
