1 janv. 1619 - 4. Indentured Servitude
Description:
*With the tobacco industry booming in the Virginia Colony, more and more people were needed in the New World to help harvest tobacco.* To solve this, the Virginia Company came up with the Headright System. This system would allow people already in the New World to get up to 50 acres of new land as long as they paid for the passage of a new immigrant. This system brought many people to the New World. Many of these people were poor people who needed to get a fresh start in the New World. In order to pay off the fees of getting themselves to the New World, these people would become Indentured Servants. They would bind themselves to an employer in the New World, and work for them for anywhere between 4-7 years. For the early part of the 1600's, Indentured Servitude was used as the primary form of human labor.
