A woman has been beheaded and two others killed in a knife attack at a church in Nice in southern France.

Several others were also injured in Thursday’s attack, which the city’s mayor, Christian Estrosi, said looked like a terrorist incident.

Police officials confirmed to The Independent that two women and one man were killed and all had their throats cut.

France’s anti-terrorist prosecutor's department has since been asked to investigate.

The attack took place inside the Notre-Dame basilica in central Nice, mayor Estrosi said, adding one of the victims was the church warden.

The suspect kept shouting "Allahu Akbar" even after he had been arrested by police, he told reporters.

Mayor Estrosi said the attacker continued to shout this while receiving medical treatment at the scene. (The Independant)
