France got Louisiana from a treaty with Spain in 1800. Jefferson did not like the idea of the French in their territory, so he tried to purchase New Orleans and some land east of it for ten million and Napoleon sold the whole territory of Louisiana for fifteen million. This led to the exploration of Lewis and Clark doing a scientific research all the way to Oregon.
