1 janv. 1533 - Execution of the last Incan Emperor
Description:
The Incan Empire had been the greatest pre-columbian empire in all of the Americas. Once the Europeans arrived however, it started on a downward spiral. This started with disease, which had come from the Europeans and was extremely detrimental to Native Americans, since they had no resistance to it. One of the most prevalent of these diseases was smallpox, estimates say that this disease alone killed around 80% of the native population. As if having their population decimated wasn't enough, the Incans were also going through an internal conflict at this time. As with many civil wars, it was a war over succession. The final nail in the coffin for the Incans was the conquest by the Spanish. They killed any Natives who would not assimilate with them and the monarch was convicted of crimes against the Spanish empire. This represented the end of an era of stability for the area for many years.
