1 févr. 1848 - First efforts at unification
Description:
After hearing news of the February 1848 revolution in Paris, many Germans felt that it was time to push for unification. Rural riots started to break out, which then spread to urban areas, advocating for ideas such as freedom of the press, a national militia, a national German parliament, and trial by jury. In May of the same year, the German National Assembly met, representing the first assembly to be freely elected by the German people. However, this government quickly failed when the King of Prussia refused to take leadership as the executive German power, and the revolution disintegrated before the end of 1849.
