1 janv. 1507 - The first reported smallpox case in the New World
Description:
In the old world great pandemics were fairly common, and people were more resistant to them because of this. When Europeans started traveling to the Americas, they brought these diseases with them, causing many deaths in native populations. In the Americas, populations were very spread out and it was nearly impossible for any disease to gain traction, because of this, people had little disease resistance, especially to European diseases that they had never been exposed to. Smallpox in particular absolutely decimated local populations, meaning that around 90% of Native Americans were killed. This first case was the start of a terrible cycle of death.
