Description:

Read-Only Rope Memory was introduced by NASA within their space probes sent to Mars. The memory functioned on the basis of 1s and 0s which were recorded by the specific arrangement of the rope (depending on the position of the rope in relevance to each band, the signal transmitted would either be ‘true’ (1) or ‘false’ (0) ). The idea was quickly replaced as it was inefficient and required tiring labour to manufacture.
