Despite its strength, several plots and coups gradually weakened the empire. Eventually, Moroccan sultan Ahmad I al-Mansur decided to take advantage of instability and sent an army to conquer the empire. Despite being outnumbered, the Moroccans possessed gunpowder technology which allowed them to topple the Songhai Empire.
