25 août 1453 - The end of the Byzantine Empire

Description:

While the Byzantine Empire isn’t actually the same thing as Rome, I thought I would throw it in anyway just to get a sense of finality for the idea of Rome. The Eastern Empire obviously did much better, considering they lasted an extra 1000 years, but that doesn’t mean that they were invincible by any means. Their end came by the hand of Ottomans in 1453 CE (History.com staff, 2010). The Byzantines had been on shaky ground economically and politically for a long time, so their end was kind of inevitable. Sultan Murad ll laid siege to Constantinople in the 1420’s, and his successor finally invaded and finished off the city in the 1450’s. Thus ends the Byzantine Empire, and with it any memory of the ancient civilization of Rome.
