27 mai 410 - Alaric And The Sack Of Rome

Description:

Alaric was a gothic military leader who is most famous for sacking the city of Rome, at the time the first person to do so in over 800 years (Wasson, 2014). The Goths were a Germanic tribe, and at the time of Alaric they were asking Rome to be a part of the Empire.Due to treaties from a different War, the Gothics were only allowed to camp out on Roman soil as allies. They wanted to be citizens, but of course the Romans weren’t making it easy. Alaric even went on conquests for Rome, bringing back money, food and other resources. All he wanted was recognition for his actions, and citizenship for his men. Rome still refused. Alaric finally had enough of this, and took advantage of Rome while it was weak from the split. He marched his men to Rome and surrounded the gates, effectively putting them in a siege. He tried everything but invading the city first, form treaties to negotiations to hostages, but since request after request was denied, he decided enough was enough and just invaded. This wasn’t quite the ultimate fall of Rome, but Rome never really came back. It’s just downhill from here.
