This British publishing house was founded originally as a line of the publishers The Bodley Head, becoming a separate company a year later. Co-founder Allen Lane created the first paperback, which revolutionised publishing. Penguin books were sold at cheap prices in various stores, and Penguin became successful selling books to the mass market. Through selling books, Penguin made an impact on public debate in Britain.
