Description:
*In response to the Conquistadors such as Hernan Cortes and Francisco Pizzaro, many natives were unhappy with how the Spanish were treating them.* And so, on August 10th, 1680, the Pueblo people living modern day New Mexico, lead by Chief Pope, rose up to overthrow the Spanish rule. They managed to capture Santa Fe, however the Spanish would quickly recapture it. Although the revolt was put down, the Pueblo people as well as many natives throughout New Spain were given religious freedoms, as well as a reversal of the Encomienda System, which was a form of enslavement the Spanish used on the natives.AP Key Concept 1.2, III
