17 janv. 1866 - Emergence of sharecropping/croplien
Description:
| WHAT: | Sharecropping initially arose as a compromise between blacks’ desire for land and planters’ demand for labor discipline. The system allowed each black family to rent a part of a plantation, with the crop divided between worker and owner at the end of the year. | EFFECT: | freed blacks initially preferred it to gang violence, but soon it became obvious it was as oppressive as before | NOTE: | many poor yeoman whites fell into the same position as blacks
