On August 29, 1842, the treaty of Nanking was signed.The treaty of Nanking was an agreement that ended the first opium war and the Chinese gave the British, possession of Hong Kong.
The British was given 21 million ounces of silver in exchange for the opium.
The treaty was the cause of the establishment of the crown colony of Hong Kong.
